outdoor camping, camping and hiking      My introduction to outdoor camping came with becoming a Boy Scout in 1953. I was in Troop 102 and at the time of my transition from Cub Scout to Boy Scout, my dad was the scoutmaster of the Troop. My dad had been a Boy Scout, achieving the level of Eagle Scout. I got as far as Star Scout. I started going on campouts with the troop before I was old enough to be a Boy Scout (at least 10 years old) because of my dad. My older brother was a Boy Scout too, and that’s kind of how my dad ended up as scoutmaster - because of my brother.

It was really a thrill for me to go outdoor camping and hiking with my dad and the other scouts. In the nice weather we would go camping every weekend or so. I have so many fond memories of all the many days that I spent camping and hiking as a Boy Scout. One time when we were outdoor camping, my dad showed us how to make Sassafras tea from the roots of a tree. I remember it kind of tasted like root beer. I don’t know if it was a Sassafras tree but my dad called it Sassafras tea.
